Dusk Patrol September 6, 2009 at Cobras Field

Report on Fun Fly by Dean Dingman

Less than two weeks before the Western Front Dawn Patrol event on September 19-20, 2009. After the fun we had flying last Sunday, I'm stoked!

We had several guys down at Cobras Field this weekend getting all the kinks out of their planes in preparation for the big event.

Terry Lamm flew the maiden on Mike's BalsaUSA Eindecker 90. He has done a fine job of recreating Ernst Udet's mount. It flies beautifully. Like Terry said, it "flies like a Stick". The gas engine that Terry converted to model aircraft use seems to power the plane well.

In fact, Terry is really getting into gas power, and is moving away from glow on a number of his planes. He has converted his Dynaflite S.E.5a to gas power as well. He flew the re-maiden of it with the new motor, and seemed pleased with the performance boost. (Not to mention the fuel cost savings and lack of "slime".)

Roger Vaad brought a very nice H9 Sopwith Camel, which is a replacement for his previous "Cheerio" which was lost a couple of months ago when an aileron clevis "let go". I had brought my Camel as well, and he and I had a fun time "beating up the field" with our flying dromedaries. Roger actually has two of the little beasties, so with Terry's Camel and mine too we are positively awash in Camels. If we get many more, they'll start calling us "the Flying Beduins"! LOL!

Larry Puls brought his Dynaflite S.E.5a down to the field, and as Larry was having a bit of difficulty with his feet, I flew it for him. After a bit of trim, it flew great (those planes do), and made a splendid landing almost by itself (they do that, too!) which made me look like a much better pilot than I am.

Harold Zimmerman brought along a new (to him, anyways) Balsa USA Taube 40 that had been converted to 4-channel with ailerons. Steve did the maiden for him. It flew fine, with the OS .46 being PLENTY of power. (Most flying was at 1/4 throttle!) Throttled back, it did what Taubes do best, low and slow. They're really neat airplanes, and now Steve wants one! (Only bigger, like the 90-sized one.) We'll hook Steve yet. *grin*

There were several other R/Cers there, too. A good time was had by all, and we flew until after sunset. Between flying, we managed to enjoy some hot dogs and also some smoked pork chops, baked beans, and potato salad I brought. We may not eat *healthy*, but at least we eat good! LOL!

Hope to see ya'll at the annual Dawn Patrol later this month!

The Dawn Patrol is a group of R/C model airplane enthusiasts who share a love of World War 1 aviation and aero-modeling. They enjoy mission-oriented flying at annual "Dawn Patrol" events, as well as at smaller informal gatherings of like-minded individuals. The purpose of the group is to have fun while promoting the WW1 aero-modeling part of the R/C flying hobby.

The "Western Front Dawn Patrol" is the R/C Dawn Patrol chapter for Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa and northern Missouri. In conjunction with the Arkansas Dawn Patrol, the Hoosier Dawn Patrol, and other groups, it is intended to boost interest in our little niche of the R/C hobby.
